Notice of General Election for Columbus County, North Carolina

Election Day: Tuesday, November 3, 2026 Polls open 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

If you do not vote during early voting, you must vote at your home precinct on Election Day. There will be no voting at the Board of Elections office on Election Day.

Voter Registration

  • Register by mail or in person at the Board of Elections office.
  • Deadline: Friday, October 9, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
  • If you are already registered in Columbus County and your name and address have not changed, you do not need to register again.
  • Missed the deadline? You may register and vote at the same time during early voting only. You must show proof of identity and residence, either:
    • a current and valid photo ID, or
    • a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing your name and address.

Absentee (By-Mail) Voting

  • Available on request from the voter, a near relative, or a legal guardian.
  • Requests must be made on the official State Absentee Ballot Request Form, available online.
  • Submit the form in person at the Board of Elections office, or by mail to: Columbus County Board of Elections, PO Box 37, Whiteville, NC 28472.
  • Requests may only be turned in by the voter or a near relative.
  • Faxed or emailed requests are no longer accepted.
  • Deadline to request: Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. (G.S. 163-230.1)

Near relatives (as defined by law): spouse, brother, sister, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, stepparent, or stepchild.

Absentee Board Meetings

The Board of Elections will meet at 5:00 p.m. at the Board of Elections office (2586 James B White Hwy N, Whiteville) to approve absentee ballot applications, pursuant to G.S. 163-230.1(c1). Other business may also be conducted.

Results for absentee-by-mail and early voting will be reported after polls close at 7:30 p.m. on November 3.

Military & Overseas Voters (UOCAVA)

Ballots must be returned by the close of polls on Election Day (7:30 p.m.), or submitted for mailing, electronic transmission, or other authorized delivery no later than 12:01 a.m. (where the voter completes the ballot) on Election Day, and received by the County Board by the last day before the County Canvass.


Buffer Zone Notice

All Election Day polling places and early voting sites will have signs marking a 50-foot buffer zone. No electioneering is allowed inside the buffer zone (NC G.S. 163-166.4(a)). Campaigning and distributing election material are allowed only outside the buffer zone.


Canvass

The County Canvass meeting will be held at the Board of Elections office on Friday, November 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
