Volunteers needed for free income tax assistance programs

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Two programs in New Hanover County are looking for volunteers to guide community members through the 2026 income tax filing process. 

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and AARP Tax-Aide program are seeking adult volunteers to help people electronically file their simple federal and North Carolina tax returns at no cost. 

“Every year, our volunteers provide a valuable service by helping residents file their taxes,” said Senior Resource Center Director Amber Smith. “Their work serves thousands of people and makes sure returns are submitted properly. These programs depend on volunteers, and we are grateful to everyone who offers their time.” 

Volunteer tax preparers are asked to work at least four hours a week from late January through April 15. Participants in either program will receive IRS-approved training and IRS certification. Training begins in December with self-study, then moves to classroom and computer training in January. It concludes with exercises preparing sample returns on IRS-provided software.
