Rabies Case | Raccoon Tested Positive

PITT COUNTY, N.C. – On September 25, 2026, Greenville Animal Services informed Pitt County Public Health of a positive rabies case in a raccoon. The animal was picked up in the area of East 10th Street and Brownlea Drive in Greenville. The raccoon was submitted for testing and laboratory results confirmed the animal was positive for rabies. Greenville Animal Services reports that they are unaware of any human or animal contact with this raccoon at this time. There is no immediate danger to humans or other animals as a result of this incident.

“Give unfamiliar or ill animals space and keep your pets’ vaccinations current,” says Wes Gray, Public Health Director. “Do not attempt to catch or approach any wild animal.”

Residents should call Greenville Animal Services immediately at 252-329-4387 to capture any suspicious animals in this area for rabies testing. If the animal is someone's pet, provide the owner's name and address to the animal control officer. Any mammal can transmit rabies. The suspected animal, depending on the species and circumstances, will have to be evaluated or tested for rabies.
